I was the artist in charge of a live art intervention at the International Summit on Sustainability and Environmental Innovation. I was responsible for the complete design and execution of the painting of a fiberglass sculpture (Andean bear), from conceptualization to final finishing. The intervention took place at the CAR and UNDP booth from September 9–11.
Statement
The fauna and flora of the Andean forest and páramo are symbols of balance and resilience. Frailejones, as guardians of water, reflect both the fragility and richness of these ecosystems. Each leaf, bird, and plant is more than an aesthetic detail: it is a tribute to Andean biodiversity and a call to protect it, transforming the bear into a guardian of nature and its vital harmony. The Andean bear in this proposal is conceived as a living landscape—a body that contains within itself the cycles of day and night.
Its back opens onto the universe: a starry sky dissolving into a vibrant sunset of oranges, pinks, and violets, symbolizing hope, transformation, and constant renewal.Spiraling, multicolored clouds unfold across its body, suggesting the diversity and vital energy that inhabit Andean ecosystems. Frailejón leaves in pastel tones grow from its legs, acting as guardians of water and symbols of resilience, while silhouetted birds and trees evoke the strength of the surrounding forest.
Process
The artistic intervention was carried out using a mixed-media technique with professional-grade outdoor acrylic paints, combined with metallic and pearlescent finishes, as well as details created with markers and spray paint.
1. Surface Preparation

Application of a white acrylic base coat to create an even background and seal the surface, ensuring paint adhesion and color durability.
2. Base Gradient – Sunset and Night Sky

Use of large brushes and sponges to create smooth transitions from warm tones—orange, pink, and yellow—on the front and upper sections toward cooler tones—dark blue and purple—across the back and upper body.

The intensity of the night sky was reinforced with dark blue and purple, creating contrast with the illuminated areas of the sunset.

An airbrush and spray paint were also used to create translucent layers and unify the gradient.
3. Starry Sky and Clouds

Creation of spiraling clouds using a glazing technique in pink, purple, and blue, applied with flat brushes and sponges to create a sense of movement.

Stars were painted in white and metallic gold, with some featuring a pearlescent finish to create luminous reflections.

Acrylic markers were incorporated to reinforce contours and points of light.
4. Vegetation and Symbolism on the Legs

Representation of frailejón leaves in pastel greens, with contrasting yellow and green tones.

Fine details were added to the leaves using round-tipped brushes.

Silhouettes of trees and birds were incorporated in black to create depth and symbolize the connection with the Andean ecosystem.
5. Details and Metallic Finishes

Metallic gray and gold accents were added to strategic areas, including the stars, clouds, and reflections of the sunset.

Pearlescent white was applied to transitions within the sky to create a dreamy atmosphere and a soft luminous effect.
6. Final Protection

The entire surface was reviewed and detailed retouching was carried out.

A transparent polyurethane varnish with UV protection was applied in several layers to ensure durability, protection against weather conditions, and long-term color preservation.
